Back pain is second only to the common cold. Initial episode of low back pain may come and go within a few days. But follow-up episodes of low back pain often last longer and are generally more severe. Although most back pains and back spasms are mechanical and spinal origins, there are some conditions that can refer pain to the back. Some conditions are specific to age, gender, ethnic race and occupation. Here are a few common conditions and injuries that cause back pain and back spasms.
Mechanical back pains are perhaps the most common among back pain suffers. The back pains are often discribed as dull aching, soreness discomfort with muscle tightness. Back stiffness and tightness are more noticeable when getting up from prolonged sitting or crouching down. Moving a certain way may cause twinges of sharp back pain. Simple activities like reaching and twisting can put the low back out.
Common causes of mechanical back pains include segmental spinal joint misalignment and dysfunction, myofascial pain, trigger points, back strain or sprain, facet syndrome, sciatica, weak and imbalanced muscles such as the quadratus lumborum and the multifidus, spinal arthritis and disc degeneration.
Central spinal stenosis, ankylosing spondylitis, and metastatic cancer can also cause low back pain. Acute kidney stones, abdominal aorta aneurysm and prostate enlargement and inflammation are just some of the conditions that can refer pain to the low back.
Back injuries
People who injured their back or have back pain are known to compensate their back muscles. Back pain suffers will often substitute the wrong muscles for lifting tasks. They tend to compensate for their back pain and the strained back extensor muscles by using abdominal muscles and other inappropriate muscles for lifting, which put more stress and strain on their back.
Another common way to get back pain or injure the low back is to fully flex the spine when lifting. By fully bend the spine forward, the back extensor muscles become inactive during the initial lifting phase. This position causes the passive soft tissues of the back including the ligaments to begin the lift. This is a dangerous way to get back pain and sprain the spinal ligaments.
